Seeking an Executive Director

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position:  Executive Director

Location:  391 Gladstone Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario

Reports to:  Board of Directors, OIM

Direct Reports:  Total staff of 10 to 15 people (combination of full- and part-time); organizational structure to be determined following hire

POSITION OVERVIEW

OIM’s mission is to come alongside and support individuals experiencing poverty and homelessness, by demonstrating the message of Christ in action and word, showing compassion, and promoting self-esteem. We are seeking a highly skilled executive director to help us fulfill the vision of a just society where people are valued, shown dignity and respect, and given the opportunity to attain an improved quality of life. Reporting to the board of directors, the executive director will oversee the strategic and operational efficiencies of our programs and staff. This experienced leader will not only understand Ottawa’s current homelessness landscape but will also have experience in developing and implementing a successful fundraising plan. Experience in hiring and managing staff is essential, and established relationships with local community groups is a plus. Above all, the executive director should be highly effective in a leadership role that requires clear communication skills and a heart for the poor.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Five or more years of experience in senior management, preferably with Christian nonprofit organizations

  • Strong experience in communications, marketing, and fundraising

  • Knowledge of leadership and management principles for nonprofit organizations

  • Proven success working with a board of directors

  • Entrepreneurial mindset, with innovative approach to business planning

  • Dynamic and charismatic team player who enjoys being the public face of an organization, with experience in public speaking and public engagements

  • Experience in managing budgets

  • Excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills

  • Spiritually mature and able to spiritually teach, mentor and lead stakeholders

  • Demonstrated ability to inspire and engage team members, leading by example

 

OBJECTIVES OF THE ROLE

  • Work closely with board directors and committees to assess and address issues affecting the organization, accepting and taking direction from the board

  • Oversee daily operations of the organization, providing executive direction for programs

  • Identify and address staffing requirements for efficient operations, and maintain a strong, faith-based employee and volunteer culture that attracts and retains people while driving the organization’s mission

  • Increase awareness of the organization by being the main spokesperson and liaison with local media, government officials, churches and other organizations

  • Develop an actionable plan for fundraising and managing monthly cash flows

  • Comply with all regulations, policies and laws for nonprofit organizations

  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and empowering workplace culture, motivating staff through clear communication, regular check-ins, and meaningful recognition of accomplishments

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create business plans for achieving the goals and objectives set in collaboration with board of directors

  • Meet aggressive annual fundraising goals, in partnership with the board of directors, by securing financial support from foundations, corporations, individual donors, and government funding sources

  • Work with staff and board on annual fundraising benefit and additional events, and oversee all external communications, including website, marketing collateral, newsletters, and social media

  • Serve as the face of the organization and participate in external events to increase visibility, credibility, and reputation, and develop strategic partnerships to further increase community awareness and expand programs

  • Build and lead an effective team that is dedicated to fulfilling the organization’s mission through highly successful programs, community engagement, and fundraising

  • Manage and provide spiritual leadership to staff members whose experiences, cultures, and languages reflect the community served by the organization

  • Develop budget proposals and provide regular financial update reports to the board

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

The person in this position must annually agree to and sign OIM’s statement of faith, be in agreement with OIM’s Objects, and sign and abide by a code of conduct and expectations of OIM employees. The person in this position is expected to uphold the organizational ends of OIM as set by the OIM Board of Directors in fulfilling the Position Description. This person must be a committed Christian actively attending a Christian church in person.
