Joy in Serving

Ottawa Innercity Ministries

After an outreach evening last week, one of our volunteers shared with me a selfie that he took midway through the evening. The photo showed the three of us walking, all with big smiles.

Reflecting on it, I’m reminded of how rewarding this work can be.

But why so, what is it about this work that brings us joy?

Nights are cold. Evenings are long. Strangers can be hostile.

Our satisfaction comes not from the good we do, not from the services we provide, or even the community formed along the way. Rather, our joy comes simply from the Lord.

In his first letter, Peter rationalizes the local believers joy and encourages them saying, “Though you have not seen him (God), you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” (1 Peter 1: 8-9)

In other passages, the Bible explains that acknowledging, delighting in, and serving Christ as Lord is the only way to find purpose and true joy. All other things will fade away.

Ottawa Innercity Ministries helps to facilitate opportunities to delight in the Lord, and serve Him in ways that are practical, impactful, and meaningful.
