Mavis’ Story – After High School (Episode 5 of 9)

Following is Mavis’ story (not her real name), one of courage and determination in the face of overwhelming obstacles and challenges.

You can hear Mavis tell her story on Family Radio CHRI 99.1 FM, each week day just after station identification at 8 am and 5 pm.

Parts of her story are messy, and always real, as is the wonderful lady who will find a special place in your heart.

Our Christmas story continues here Episode 5, as Mavis drops out of school and things get complicated:

College lasted only for a couple of months. The program was overwhelming, the workload was huge, projects too complex, and there were way too many things to remember. I couldn’t afford a proper laptop, and that was part of it.

After dropping out, I met J. who was already attending OIM’s Innercity Arts program.

J. had been homeless for four years, and we finally got an apartment together. We had enough money to pay our basic bills, but we were always short on food. I had to go panhandle to get food. My corner was in front of a store, and sometimes people would buy extra groceries to help me out.

Living in poverty is a hard thing, in so many ways. Begging for food is not easy but sometimes there are few options. People are hungry, for food and relationship. Your gift at Christmas will help us provide for those in greatest need, right here in Ottawa.

Stay tuned for the next episode of Mavis’ story, coming soon.

Thanks so much for your prayers and support that allow us to continue to reach out to young people just like Mavis.

Merry Christmas!

~Ken – Executive Director
