Dancing with Jerry

While I was away over the Christmas break, I was saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Jerry, whom I first met in 2022. I often saw Jerry at a drop-in I volunteer at, and just as frequently, he and I would usually chat for a while. He often shared bits of wisdom with me and pointed to the Bible to reinforce what he was sharing. At the drop-in, where I usually saw Jerry, hymns would be sung, and he would dance as they played. Oh, how Jerry loved dancing. As long as he was able and had space, he was up dancing to the sound of music and singing along.

At OIM’s Thanksgiving Meal, I saw Jerry for the first time in a while. He was waiting in line to enter Knox so he could eat. I didn’t know that encounter with him would be the last. I thank God I saw Jerry one last time before being called home to Heaven. It was a short but encouraging encounter.

As soon as I saw him, I said, “Jerry! Hey, how are you?” He greeted me with a smile; a big, warm, and genuine smile. “I’m doing well,” he said. "Good, I'm glad," I said, also smiling. Then, the line started to move, and we were forced to end our conversation. “Well, hey, it was really good seeing you, Jerry. It’s been a while, so I’m glad to see you here today.” “Thanks, it has. It was good to see you, too,”  he said as he walked inside.

Unfortunately, I didn’t see Jerry after that. While our chat was brief, I left feeling encouraged because it had been several months since I’d seen him. I'm thankful that the last time I saw him was a joyous moment I can remember for a long time.

The reality that many of us face at OIM is that we never know if our interaction with a street friend is the last time we ever see them alive. I’m thankful that Jerry had a personal relationship with Jesus and is now dancing with Him in heaven.
