“He has his father’s eyes”

A common and cute sentiment that is often expressed over babies. Or his mother’s nose, or her uncle’s cheekbones, etc. It is wonderful to look at a new-born, and to rapturously search the face for those oh so familiar details – we see reflected there not just the memory of someone we love, but its living expression. A daily reminder of on-going genetic continuity. Of family.

Of course, while we may each bear some partial resemblance to our father, we are more profoundly created in the image of Our Father. And in your face, particularly in the faces of my street friends, I can see that image. It’s not always easy, but it’s always there: you have your Father’s eyes.
