Thanksgiving. It's a time for family gatherings, sharing a special meal and thoughts around what we are thankful for. As we reminisce about past family gatherings and catch up on what's new in our lives, we bask in the glow of family love and a shared history. There is great comfort in knowing we belong. I cannot help but think of our street friends and their lack of the basic comforts many of us take for granted and the sense of belonging.
There are many ministries and charities around our city that will provide Thanksgiving meals on October 14th. OIM will also provide a Thanksgiving meal, but we do it differently. We offer a special meal after the holiday. This allows us to bless our street friends with another yummy meal, complete with all the trimmings. Staff, along with an army of volunteers, prepare and serve the food with loving hands. Tables are decorated to reflect the occasion. Each place setting is complete with notes of love and encouragement from the community.
To see all the smiles and to know there will be full bellies is both a privilege and a blessing. Being the hands and feet of Jesus is what we, as Christ followers, are called to do.
This year, I am thankful for the circumstances that led me to serve with OIM. I am thankful for our donors and everyone who has made OIM a part of their lives. I am thankful to know our street friends are being supported and cared for. Thank you, Jesus, for your mercy, grace and love and for equipping us to serve the poor and unhoused.
