Mavis’ Story – Innercity Arts (Episode 6 of 9)

Following is Mavis’ story (not her real name), one of courage and determination in the face of overwhelming obstacles and challenges.

You can hear Mavis tell her story on Family Radio CHRI 99.1 FM, each week day just after station identification at 8 am and 5 pm.

Parts of her story are messy, and always real, as is the wonderful lady who will find a special place in your heart.

In Episode 6 of our Christmas Story, Mavis discovers Innercity Arts:

I first found out about the OIM art program through J., my partner. He kept inviting me to the art program. I told him I’m a bit shy and he said, “Don’t worry, everyone is really welcoming.”

We bussed downtown, walked about 20 minutes, and when I came to the group, I was warmly welcomed. Everyone tried to be my friend.

They knew I was shy, and still they welcomed me.

Now, it’s like this is my family: when I come in, everyone says, “Hey, Mavis is here!” Everyone knows my name and knows when I am coming.

I kind of feel like I’m a celebrity- they ask me how I’m doing, what I’ve been doing and how’s your week? People care for me here. It’s just what family should be.

The longing for acceptance and community is a basic need.

Mavis has become part of the OIM family, and we are here for her.

Please make a special gift this Christmas.

Stay tuned for the next episode of Mavis’ story, coming soon.

Thanks so much for your prayers and support that allow us to continue to reach out to young people just like Mavis.

Merry Christmas!
