“I will turn their mourning into joy…”

The past few months have been particularly difficult as my wife and I experienced the loss of both of our dogs. In September, our English Springer Spaniel, Pippin, suddenly got sick and died a few days later, at 7 years old. Three months later, our pug, Lulu, passed three days before her 10th birthday. Our house went from being full of energy, long walks, many playful moments, letting them in and out to go pee, to being quiet and lonely.

I believe that God is so good, and His heart mourns with ours, yet it can be easy to find ways to blame God for allowing such loss to happen. We are fully aware that pets are only with us for a short time, but it is easy to feel robbed of more time we could have had with them.

Earlier this month, one of the youth in the Arts program asked to speak with me. He shared a few things that were troubling him, one of them being the loss of a pet. This pet was the second he had lost in a short amount of time. I would like to say that I was able to be strong and supportive, but I also opened up about the loss of my pets. We shared a special moment of understanding each other and the pain we both experienced.

I believe that the moment I shared with this individual deepened our relationship and was a seed planted. I pray that I will have more opportunities to connect with this individual, that they would know they are loved by the God of the universe.

If anyone else is going through loss right now, I pray you will be comforted. I pray that you would experience a connection with someone you may not have expected. Reach out to someone, seek professional help, devote yourself to prayer, and absorb the promises in scripture.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4

“I will turn their mourning into joy; I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.” Jeremiah 31:13

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” John 14:27
