Nothing is too Little to Help

We usually don’t realize how even a little act of love can change a life.

As street outreach volunteers, we don’t always see the results of what we do. Everyday we have teams going out to provide, serve, and interact with those that are in desperate need for basic necessities such as food, water, and brotherly/sisterly love. Sometimes serving is a matter of active listening, making phone calls to reserve a shelter bed, or connecting a street friend to support workers.

I share the following true story on how outreach work has impacted Jordan’s (not his real name) life. Jordan’s housing situation landed him on the street, leaving him nowhere to go. With no friends or family to rely on, he could not make ends meet. The outreach teams provided him daily with sandwiches and basic needs. They showed him love, encouraged him, and offered referrals to other agencies. Little did we know at that time that our services contributed to his success today. Now, Jordan has a steady job and is able to rent his own apartment. Jordan told some of our outreach team volunteers that, without them, he would never have been able to get out of the (homeless) life. He was extremely thankful for our services for getting him through this difficult period in his life.

The house that Jordan grew up in was abusive and neglectful. We wouldn’t have known this unless we had spent time with him. It is important to share real love and build meaningful relationships with others so they can witness the love of God in us and build themselves a life apart from the street.

Homeless people come from all walks of life, caused by different situations such as layoffs, mental illness, abusive home life, children’s aid society, addictions, etc. Whatever the reason is, showing love and mercy is a one of the fruits that identifies us as God’s children.

The bible tells us:

If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? 1 John 3:17-18 NIV

Jesus also told his disciples about the biggest commandment:

…. “Love the Lord our God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27

Together we can make a difference in our neighbour's life!!
