There are days that are just tougher than others. Sometimes, at the end of the day, you sit back and reflect on what made that day so special. There are days that just seem to breeze by, and before you know it, it’s time to go home, and you wonder where the time went.
I have recently experienced both types of days. It was a tough day where we had to say goodbye to yet another fellow comrade, and yet, as I sat in the chair and looked out my living room window, wondering if there was more we could have done, I realized that we did what we could, and now it was time to just be there for those who knew him better than we did.
The next day was the opposite, with time flying by so fast as we helped 4 Veterans overcome several hurdles standing in their way. Some more extensive than others, but all left feeling appreciative for the assistance we provided. Once again, I sat and pondered the differences between the two days. One left me sad, the other left me feeling happy to be able to help and know that we are on the right track.
In both instances, it was my desire to serve as Christ had done. In Philippians 2:5, it states, “in your relations with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus”. It was with a sense of satisfaction that I realized I had done that.
In both situations, the Veterans knew they could come to us for help and camaraderie. They knew that if they asked, we would do all we could. No task was too small or too great. Ok, some are beyond our means, but even then, we direct them to the best location to get the assistance they need.
Each time we help, it is like adding a little water to the flowers to help them grow. Each time we help, it is one step closer to getting some of these men and women into better living situations.
It is an honour and a privilege to assist each one who comes through these doors.
