The Door

Seeing people at the door is about more than offering a sandwich and a drink. It means encountering the reality of poverty, addiction, mental illness, and deep human suffering. These situations are heartbreaking, but they also lead us to ask, “Jesus, what would You do here?”

In those moments, we are reminded that Christ calls us not only to meet physical needs but also to respond with compassion, dignity, and love. At times, we become so occupied with our own plans and priorities that we fail to see the soul before us, a soul that God deeply values. In Matthew 10:29–31, we are reminded that we are so precious to God that even the hairs on our heads are numbered. In Jeremiah 1:5, we learn that God knew us before we were formed and set each of us apart for His purpose.

Many who come to our door are held captive by pain, hardship, loneliness, or addiction. Yet Jesus desires to bring them out of darkness and into His marvellous light. Often, He chooses to work through us, His ambassadors on earth, to extend His love, hope, and compassion to those who are struggling.

There are moments when interruptions seem like distractions. Yet sometimes those very interruptions are divine appointments. Just as Jesus was willing to leave everything for the sake of one person (Luke 15:3-7), we too are called to pause, to be His ambassadors, and reflect His love, patience, and grace to those, even if it is not convenient.

Our responsibility is to seek His wisdom and direction in every situation. The outcome may not always be what we expect, but God, who knows every heart and every story, acts with perfect understanding. Even when we cannot see the results, His love leaves a lasting impression.

One day, those we serve may remember that, in their darkest moments, God's love was present through someone who cared enough to stop, listen, and show it. And perhaps that simple act of obedience became the very door through which they encountered Him.
