The Holy Spirit at work

We often place pressure on ourselves to master the "perfect" way to evangelize. We buy and read the latest evangelism book, rehearse elevator pitches, or search for the ultimate strategy to lead someone to Christ. While these resources are valuable, we frequently forget to think about or involve the Holy Spirit.

It’s easy to feel that if we stumble over a word or miss a step in the evangelism strategy, our efforts feel less effective. I’ve certainly been there. But the Holy Spirit stirs hearts in ways that we may not understand and surprises us when we least expect it.

Just before the holidays, a client from our Veterans’ housing program knocked on the office door during our Friday Fellowship program. Our administrator greeted him and invited him to join our Alpha group already in progress. He accepted, got some food, and sat quietly as the video session played.

Sadly, he didn't stay for the whole video or for the group discussion. Our leaders and volunteers were left feeling a bit disappointed, wishing he could have stayed to engage and connect. But, on the table where the Veteran had been sitting, they found a piece of paper with these words written on it:

“Jesus is the King of kings.”

No one expected it. And here is the miraculous part: that specific phrase was never mentioned in the video, nor was it spoken by any volunteer. Without the full video or a discussion with others, this Veteran simply just knew. The Holy Spirit was no doubt at work in this Veteran. Praise God!

So, this is a beautiful reminder that we don’t have to be perfect; we just have to be present.
