Welcoming Summer

Imagine this: After a long day of trying to find relief from the elements, you’re faced with a choice that feels like no choice at all.

Do you head to a shelter, where the threat of physical or verbal assault is likely? Do you retreat to a rooming house, where every corner is occupied by people struggling with untreated mental illness or substance abuse?

Or, do you go into the same tent you’ve called home for months, or years, simply because it’s the only place you feel safe? This is the reality for too many.

At Ottawa Innercity Ministries, we see the changing seasons through a lens of faith and compassion. Winter reminds us how fragile life can be when resources are limited. Long nights and extreme cold can isolate people physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Summer is not just about comfort; it is about restoration and hope.

Jesus met people where they were: on dusty roads, by wells, along shorelines. Summer invites us to do the same. It calls us out of our routines and into a relationship. Whether through outreach, shared meals, or a simple conversation, warmer days make it easier to connect with those who are often overlooked.

The Bible urges us to remember those in need: “Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ” (ESV, Galatians 6:2). Summer gives us practical ways to live this out; by noticing, listening, and responding with love.

While most of us are limited in what we can do, all we ask is that you do whatever you can to help. Things as simple as praying for our leaders to follow Jesus’ example. Praying for those in need of spiritual and physical healing. Tithing to support your Church and its ministries. And yes, if you wish, calling OIM and finding out how you too can make a difference with us. Last year, we had more than 33,000 interactions on the streets of Downtown Ottawa. We couldn’t do it without you! Thank you for all that you do. God Bless!
