God's Grace

It's truly a blessing to not only hear but witness God actively at work in the lives of those in need. A few months ago, I heard that one of our street friends, whom we’ll call Joe, confided in someone about his struggle with being judgmental. That person then shared how great it was to hear that God was working in Joe. Joe was quick to criticize anyone in the Christian community if they didn't meet his personal standards of Christian living.

Honestly, our conversations would sometimes be exhausting. Joe would often make bold claims, like how no churches in Ottawa seemed to have the Holy Spirit. His judgmental attitude was always evident, and I couldn't understand why he couldn't see it himself.

When I heard that Joe was seriously examining his heart and acknowledging his judgmental behaviour, I was incredibly encouraged. My initial reaction praised God for His work in Joe's life. "Praise God, that's great news!" I exclaimed.

But then, the Lord convicted me. God brought to my heart Matthew 7:3: "Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?" This verse hit me hard. I was so focused on the "speck" in Joe's eye that I completely missed the "log" in my own. I have my own struggles and shortcomings, and it wasn't fair of me to be so critical of Joe.

Yes, it truly was great news that God was actively working in Joe's heart – I wholeheartedly believe that. But as I looked deeper, I realized a part of my happiness stemmed from a selfish place: it meant our conversations would likely become less burdensome for me. I was partially rejoicing because of how it impacted me, a sinful human being, rather than solely celebrating Joe's journey in his relationship with the Lord.

I thank God for His forgiveness of my selfishness, and I'm even more grateful for His sanctifying work in Joe's life.
