Veteran Housed: Victory for Christ

It’s not often that the good news comes and keeps coming. But recently, Operation Road Home has scored several significant victories in housing unhoused and precariously-housed Veterans. I’d like to share with you the most recent one, which I feel is very poignant, because the individual in question has struggled for several years to overcome many obstacles. He has been very perseverant and a strong self-starter in initiating and pursuing goal-oriented behaviours, which have led to this recent victory in getting him housed.

Let’s call him Matt. Matt came to me just before Christmas of 2025 in a bit of a pickle. He had just lost his Mother, with whom he had been very close, and had been her end-of-life caregiver. This had hit Matt very hard, and I could tell that he was not feeling 100%, especially around Christmas.

He was surviving hand-to-mouth in a sub-standard basement rooming house arrangement, which was precarious and fraught with pestilence issues. His fellow rooming house lodgers, with whom he shared the bathroom and kitchen facilities, were not as mature and clean as he was when it came to doing their share of the household chores.

Matt was barely managing with Social Assistance and a bare minimum from VAC, as he struggled to get his Operational Stress Injuries properly assessed and compensated from VAC so as to be able to live in a more honourable manner. We initially tried to house Matt in one of our Transitional Housing units, but the provider does not take pets, and Matt had a cat. Unfortunately, Veterans House was not available after I inquired about it on his behalf. So Matt said he’d look for either RGI housing for himself or a low-cost bachelor/studio unit within his price range, and we’d kick in first and last month’s rent, plus assistance with moving, food, and transit. A couple of days ago, Matt emailed me saying that he’d found a unit in his price range, and that he was in the process of moving his stuff in, and that he’d get the lease to me asap so that we can provide the first and last month’s rent, which he provided just recently.

So another victory for ORH! Matt expressed a great deal of gratitude for the help we gave him, and has expressed his intent to become more involved in IVOS, since I invited him to our Wednesday at Home Lunch Group for Veterans. Matt thanked God for the help we gave him, so that’s another plus! Praise the Lord!
