Life to the Full

Last week, we started running an Alpha course at OIM. I was really excited as I’ve actually never done one, but I’ve heard really good things from many people who have. I figured, why not throw myself right in and help lead one?
Part of me was nervous, questioning “what if nobody comes?” Yet there was also a very real excitement for an amazing opportunity to share the hope of the gospel. Knowing that it is God’s will for people to come to know and accept him eased my worries of no one coming.
One of the early ice-breaking activity questions was “if it turned out there was a God, what is one thing you would ask if you were face-to-face?” This question is purposely worded in an unassuming way for people who don’t believe and to allow them to explore the possibility that God could exist. These questions are not answered at this point in the series.
While I was expecting to hear some difficult responses and questions for God, including “why do bad things happen?” There was one response that truly resonated. The response was along the lines of, “Where are you? Why don’t you answer my prayers? I need help with relationships and finances. Why is life so hard?”
I’m sure all of us have been able to relate to this line of questioning at some point or another. We all go through difficult times, and we may learn with our heads that sin has separated us and broken this world, that God has a plan and can use our pain for his glory, although we rarely truly understand it in our hearts.
Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). When I look at our friends on the street and think for a minute about the things they have been through, I think this certainly isn’t life to the full. Most are barely surviving, and some aren’t even doing that.
Jesus also said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). I want more than anything for people to draw near to Jesus and experience God’s goodness, His joy, peace, and love, even in this broken world, and especially in a new, eternal kingdom.
To OIM’s volunteers and supporters, thank you for all that you do in bringing God’s kingdom and hope to earth. Your work has eternal value.
