It is almost Advent season - the time of year when we remember that Christ ‘became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14). But it can be so hard to remember the real reason for Christmas when we get swamped with a huge to-do list at this time of year - year end things, Christmas parties, getting ready for family and our own Christmas celebrations, buying presents. I find that it takes a lot of effort every November and December to remember the real reason for Christmas and not get caught up in the craziness of the season.
Remembering why Jesus came helps us to stay focused on Him during these busy months. Jesus came to shine light into the darkness of our world (John 1:3), to heal and bring life from our hurts and chaos (Isaiah 35:5-6) and to bring justice to our world and lift people up out of shame (Isaiah 42:1-4). Isaiah 61 states that Jesus came to heal the broken-hearted, open prison doors, comfort those who mourn, rebuild lives, remove shame and dishonor and to bless so that God’s Name will be glorified.
Jesus continues to do all these things and He invites all of us to join Him in His work; not just at Christmas but all through the year. OIM has answered that call from Jesus. OIM’s staff and volunteers do phenomenal work with street-involved people - from youth to seniors and veterans - helping to lift them out of where they are and rebuild their lives. All to the glory of God.
