Rungs of the Ladder

This week we had our Summer BBQ for our Street Friends at Knox Presbyterian Church.

It was a great day where we had the honour to serve our Street Friends. We provided a burger, a hotdog, a bag of chips and a dessert, and most importantly, many of our volunteers shared their time with our guests.

It was a time to celebrate as we saw more people than we have ever seen at one of our special meals. On the other hand, it was a time to lament the fact that unfortunately more people than ever felt the need to be there.

While it was a great joy and a privilege to help pull this off, it was also a reminder that in today’s world we cannot compartmentalize our Street Friends and just meet with them for a special event.

I witnessed a sermon from OIM’s Pastor Shawn a little while ago. It summed up what yesterday meant to me. Too many of us are busy climbing the ladder of life. We struggle to pass others and get to the next rung. The problem is, often when we reach the top and look around, we realize we sacrificed everything that was important to us on our way there. I believe we should have been modeling what Jesus did on earth. He was God and became a man. He chose the bottom of the ladder and became a servant leader, whereas it could be all to easy for me surrender and struggle to become a leader for others to serve.

Yesterday I witnessed a lot of servant leaders coming alongside those less fortunate than themselves. To each and everyone of them I say thank you!
