Made in the Image of God

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to sit down with a guest at our Summer BBQ meal to chat. She shared some of her life story with me—a story filled with war, hunger, and uncertainty about the future. I felt honoured to listen to this lady share her experiences, which were so different from mine. At OIM, we have the privilege of connecting with people from all sorts of backgrounds and life experiences, often so different from our own.

One thing we all have in common, something that I have been reflecting on recently, is the beautiful truth that we all have been made by God and are known by him, as Psalm 139 speaks of:

“O Lord, you have searched me and known me!

You know when I sit down and when I rise up;

    you discern my thoughts from afar.

You search out my path and my lying down

    and are acquainted with all my ways.

Even before a word is on my tongue,

    behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.

You hem me in, behind and before,

    and lay your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;

    it is high; I cannot attain it.”

“For you formed my inward parts;

    you knitted me together in my mother's womb.

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.[a]

Wonderful are your works;

    my soul knows it very well.”

Psalm 139:1-6, 13-14 ESV

He knows each one of us and all that we have been through, and also what lies ahead for us. And not only does He know us, but He cares about us.

How might this truth transform the way that we see and interact with those around us? I pray that as each one of us serves and ministers to those around us, we would take this truth to heart and bring glory to God by valuing and caring well for each person He has made, no matter how different from each other we might be.
